JOHN 15:8 “Bear Much Fruit”
This free printable was taken from the complete bible verse “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.” (ESV, from BibleHub)
Just in the last week or so here in the Ozarks of southern Missouri where I live, Autumn has come fully upon us. We’ve had sporadic days of weather where the temperature dipped down enough to give us a taste of Fall, but the actual full-blown blessings of the season have eluded us until this week.
Each morning, I try to take a little neighborhood walk to soak in some sunshine and clear my head before starting my work-at-home day of clicking on the keyboard. This morning I woke up to the cat on my chest, the dog by my side (kind of the norm around here) but also 40 degree weather. We hadn’t yet lit the pilot light on our furnace so I sprinted to retrieve a tiny little space heater to supplement – holding out as long as possible to fire up the beast to heat the whole house.
I reveled in wearing my sweatpants and layers of shirts as I started off on my walk out the front door. Leaves are starting to turn a bit crispy and fall to the ground setting off Autumn in its splendor. The cool air nipped at my skin so much today that I had remorse in not bringing a jacket with me – yes, a jacket! I love this time of year and everything about it.
Fall encompasses the messy and beautiful end to reaping rewards from the fruits born in summer. The trees all let out a sigh of relief and drop their leaves to the ground, naked and ready for winter to come, but also peaceful and comfortable that their job is done for now.
The forests of many kinds of trees are merely waiting for another season to cycle through and come upon their time to bear fruit again. It is a never ending process. Whatever the trees’ circumstances, even after times of harsh winter, drought, fire and physical pruning inflicted by the hand of man, they will always be called on by their creator to once again bear much fruit. Apart from His seasons that ebb and flow consistently, bringing the tree back to its purpose, it can not bear fruit for Him as it is intended.
John 15 (ESV, from BIbleHub)
I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
Seems to me, at least from personal experience, that human circumstance and seasons in life are much less predictable, but the outcome is the same with the ultimate purpose to bear much fruit for a loving and kind Creator – a Creator who prunes out of necessity, out of concern, out of meaning, just as He thought to do so for the trees. Think how much more He thinks to do so for His children, for you.
I hope this free PDF scripture verse printable from John 15:8 will be something to remind you or a friend (or a stranger you meet and pass it along too), how important seasons in life are for the bearing of fruit. Sometimes these pruning seasons are as difficult to carry on your shoulders as that of the ice covered trees of winter, but our God never left the trees behind, nor will He let you stand in a season without preparing the way for the next season to come. Rejoice in your pruning for you are being enabled to bear much fruit for your Creator.
